Wonderful Device
I love it, and have probably "sold" 5 in the last month because of my enthusiasm. I read it on the beach all summer in a Zip-loc bag. I find the page turning bars easy to use, the Back button marvelous when reading the paper, and the clippings section wonderful for saving quotes for speeches.I can get wireless connectivity in places where my Blackberry doesn't work.I have bought enough books at the reduced rate to almost pay for the device. I find I read faster too, because I click the bar one paragraph from the bottom, anticipating the short pause, and the timing is perfect.Everyone who sees me reading it gets an enthusiastic lesson. Bring on the color version!I'll upgrade! 2008-08-26

Outstanding
This is the equivalent of an iPod for books. I cannot overstate my love for this product. Allows you to carry a myriad of books and publications at your fingertips and go to the bookstore at any hour from anywhere. The wireless coverage is exceptional and has held up in many areas where my cell phone coverage has not. Download speed is extraordinary. Battery life is excellent. Instant lookup features (both dictionary and Internet) add even more to the reading experience. Bookmark, clipping, highlight and note features make this product invaluable. Finally, customer service has been outstanding. Thank you Amazon for bringing this product to market! 2008-08-26

I am in Heaven!
My husband bought me a Kindle for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. My first thought was, "Huh?" I LOVE TO READ! I read constantly and quickly. I like books, magazines, newspapers, etc. When I opened this little ugly device I was very skeptical that it would replace in ANY WAY the books I so dearly love.
I am a Kindle junkie now. I get everything I want in this little device. My hubby thought it was so cool I could surf the web (kinda) and check my email. This has no interest to me. I LOVE THE READER.
The books, magazines, and newspapers are delivered almost instantly to my Kindle. I was able to up the size of the font and read more comfortably than I have in years. That, alone, has been a joy. Finding large type books can be a chore. In most cases I would just read the regular books and live with the headache. No more headaches!!! I forget that I am reading on a computer. At first I kept hitting the next page or previous page buttons by mistake. But I've adjusted and I no longer have a problem with the controls. I was up and reading within 30 minutes of unwrapping this wonderful gift.
I would love to read more independently published books on the Kindle and wished I could search content based on this. The little gems I have found are worth the search. I hope more people get there stuff out there via Kindle. WE WANT TO READ YOUR WORK!
I have to say that this has opened up a whole new world for me. No matter where I am at I can read what I want. I cannot wait until my favorite authors get more of their work in the Kindle store. The pricing of the books is pretty good. I've bought books from $3.00 to $9.99. I think that is terrific. And since I purchased an additional 4GB SD Card I can literally hold a couple of thousand books and such. So much for my reading budget.
If you like to read then the price is well worth it. Especially since there is no monthy charge for the wireless content. If you're looking for a computer for email, document creating, surfing the web and such, I would wait until the next generation or two come out.
Note to Amazon: MORE BOOKS PLEASE, MORE AUTHORS PLEASE, MORE PUBLISHERS PLEASE (and don't stop!) ... And thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Jeff Bezos!

Portable books
The kindle meets my expectations. I like the ability to store several books when I travel. It's very easy to read. My preference would be to have the instructions re use also in hard copy for easier reference. 2008-08-26

Good Product - Bad Ergonomics
First let me say that I love the Kindle. I usually have between 3 and 5 books going at the same time and switch between them depending on my mood. The Kindle is a perfect tool for multi-booking. All the books I'm reading are with me all of the time with less than the bulk of a single book.
That said...I'm looking forward to Kindle's next version. Maybe there was a deadline to get this to market, but the current Kindle design - though touting ergonomics - is VERY CLUMSY to use. It's as though it's sleek design was accepted on its visual merit and put into production without a single test in human hands. It's impossible to hold in one hand without pressing a button that turns the page. In order to hold the Kindle while reading it has to be in it's leather cover. This would be fine since it makes the Kindle feel more book-like if not for the design of the attachment mechanism. To secure the Kindle to the leather cover the unit has to be latched onto a plastic hook that pulls the battery cover in the same direction required to open it. So if you nudge the cover a little in the wrong direction, the battery cover opens and the Kindle falls out. This has happened about seven times in the month I've owned it. Closing the leather cover presents a problem too. Since the click-wheel used for navigation sits proud of the Kindle's body, closing the cover clicks the wheel and the unit starts to navigate. So if you want to move from one reading place to another, you either have to carry the Kindle with its cover open or turn the Kindle off and close the cover to move. The highlighting function, while useful, inexplicably forbids highlighing across pages. If you want to highlight a passage that continues onto the next page, you have to create two separate highlight boxes with two separate tags.
The ink screen is easy to read, with no adverse effect on the eyes and the distracting ink placement process is easy to get used to. The Kindle is a good product that's ergonomically challenged. I assume Amazon is working on a version 2.0. If these shortcomings are addressed in the next version, then Amazon will REALLY have something.
